This past weekend was an incredible, incredible one. It was the second weekend in a row with great weather, yet still this weekend beat out the last. This past weekend it was a good average temperature of 75 degrees throughout downtown and guess what else? No humidity! What? No humidity, you ask? Yes, it is possible and it happens here.
Friday evening started with a trip to the opera! We went to Keller Auditorium, an independently owned auditorium that has been around since 1917. It is south of Portland's main downtown street's, it is decent in size, and has a gorgeous fountain immediately across the street, perfect to take pictures like this :)
This was taken right before the group of us (Shannon, Eric, and their neighbors Erika and Don) attended the opera, "Candide". I had been very excited to see the opera with professional performers because, in the past, I had both read the 'book' and already seen the opera performance at Michigan State University with college/graduate performers - it was amazing from what I had remembered! Sadly, though, the performance that we saw Friday evening did not meet my expectations. I think it may have been a combination of the set design and performance, and I truly think they changed the story around a bit because I do not remember it the way it was presented. At least we walked out of there with many super cute group shots in front of the fountain and a rush to get to the nearest, most delicious bar :)
Evidently, not only does Portland = Beer, it also = Tater Tots. The bar that we went to, Blue Moon, has an amazing happy hour that includes amazing drink specials, but also discounted burgers (both meat and garden of course), hummus, and Cajun tater tots! These Cajun tater tots are pretty much incredible and I will be having many more tots in my life I am sure.
Saturday was a great lazy day (also, Happy Mother's Day). We all slept in, and then lounged at the pool for many hours. At the apartment complex where I am currently staying there is a pool, hot tub, sauna, and work out room. Luckily we got to the pool before noon because shortly thereafter the lounge-chairs filled up and we would definitely would not have gotten a spot to lay out by the pool otherwise.
After enough lounging and frisbee throwing, we decided to try the new ice cream shop in a really cute Portland district in downtown - the store is called Salt and Straw. I really need to start coming up with better adjectives than using 'amazing' and 'incredible' all the time, but I really can't stop saying it...Salt and Straw was amazing!! It's a farm-to-cone ice cream shop that has a slew of delicious and unique flavors. Try a Dandelion Sorbet with Spring Flowers? How about a Honey Balsamic Strawberry with Cracked Pepper? I went with the traditional - Sea Salt Ice Cream with Caramel Ribbon and it was by far the best caramel swirl ice cream I have ever had. Find your favorite here.
Always busy, always vintage, always delicious. |
The most crazy part about this whole blog post is that I have not even gotten to what happened on Sunday. I will post more about Sunday later. For now, I will leave you with a few teaser photos...look forward to the next post!
